CEAT celebrates 100 years, plans for its future

Monday, December 31, 2012 0

The College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology (CEAT) recently concluded the celebration of its centennial from October 2011 to October 2012. The celebration had for its theme, “Kaagapay sa Paghubog ng Katangi-tanging Inhinyero at Pagtataguyod ng Angkop na Teknolohiya Para sa Susunod na Siglo” (Partner in Molding Excellent Engineers and Developing Appropriate Technologies for the Next Century).

CEAT kicked off the celebration by flying Chinese lanterns during the Loyalty Day and Alumni homecoming foot parade in October 2011. Following the parade, personnel, students, and the alumni planted 100 trees around the Electrical Engineering building and launched memorabilia items bearing the CEAT centennial logo. The logo was designed by Jessa Mae Loresto, a senior BS Chemical Engineering student. The College held the “CEAT Centennial Lecture Series,” where faculty members and invited guest lecturers shared about research. On March 2, 2012, the College marked the Centennial Foundation Day by recognizing its honor students, outstanding personnel, topnotchers of licensure examinations, and retirees. In the evening, it held the first-ever CEAT Centennial Concert entitled “Himig at Sayaw” at the D.L. Umali Hall, featuring performances by its faculty members and student organizations. The concert was an offshoot of the winning entry of CEAT in the 2011 UPLB Faculty Follies.

(CEAT has been first place winner in the Faculty Follies since 2008). The College also honored graduates in a testimonial ceremony in April 2012. CEAT held the culminating activities of their centennial celebration in October 2012 with a fun run, a technological exhibit, and the unveiling of a commemorative marker. CEAT One, or the Centennial Fun Run, was held at Baker Hall and was participated in by the faculty, staff, students, and guests. The technological exhibit showed old and new technologies developed by the College and featured a demonstration of new technologies. The CEAT lobby was  transformed into a mini-museum of memorabilia featuring items such as the college shirts through the years. The College’s commemorative marker, installed at the Electrical Engineering Building, was inaugurated by CEAT dean, Dr. Arnold R. ElepaƱo, on Oct. 10. During the culminating event, the College launched the CEAT Centennial Souvenir Program. The souvenir documents the historical milestones of CEAT and highlights over a hundred technologies that CEAT developed through the years. It contains articles by two former deans of the then Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (IAE) entitled “Agricultural Engineering at UPLB from 1955 to 1977” by Dr. Dante B. De Padua and “The Story of CEAT” by Dr. Reynaldo M. Lantin.

Also featured are the histories of the following departments: Chemical Engineering by Dr. Jovita D.  Layoso-Movillon; Civil Engineering by Dr. Marish S. Madlangbayan; Electrical Engineering by Eng. Roderick L. Catriz; and Industrial Engineering by Eng. Haerold Dean Z. Layaoen. The souvenir program featured the profiles of some CEAT units, staff, and student organizations; the various departments’ mission and vision; performance ratings in PRC licensure examinations; and extension activities.

Also, the College crafted “The CEAT Roadmap” in a workshop participated in by CEAT faculty
members and representatives of various units in October 2011. The roadmap outlines the College’s plans for the next 6, 12, and 18 years. (KE Araguas)
